Bifunctional Nickel Phosphides Nanocatalyst for Efficient Photo-assisted Water Splitting |

Developing a highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential to reduce the energy consumption, cost, and simplify overall water splitting systems. Herein, we obtained the Ni2P nanoparticles (NPs) show that high catalytic activity for electrochemical HER. Importantly, the Ni2P NPs can also be used as a cocatalyst of an anodic BiVO4 photocatalyst to boost the photocatalytic water oxidation reaction via a facile drop-casting method. Under optimal conditions, the incorporation of Ni2P NPs can significantly increase photocurrent density up to 1.4 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE, corresponding to 70% enhancement in comparison to the pristine BiVO4 photoanode. The ultrasmall size of Ni2P nanoparticles (NPs) is beneficial for enhancing reactive sites as well as reducing charge transfer resistance on the BiVO4 photoanode. The findings of this work demonstrated the advantages of Ni2P NPs for overall water splitting which are of great significance to promote the application of hydrogen energy. |
