In order to reduce methanol crossover to cathode, the concept of modifying the morphology of proton conducting membrane is proposed. We used the method of plasma etching and Pd sputtering on Nafion polymer membrane. Methanol permeability tests were conducted in a specially-designed cell. Plasma etching of Nafion membrane increased the roughness of the membrane surface and decreased the methanol permeability. The sputtering of Pd on the plasma etched NafionTM further decreased the methanol crossover. Improved DMFC performance curves were obtained in a single cell containing these modified Nafion's |
