The synthesis and application of a multi-hydroxy polymer and its hydrogel are demonstrated. Poly(N-2,3-dihydroxypropyl aspartamide) (PDHPA) is a kind of poly(amino acid) and is composed of a peptide backbone and pendent 1,2-dihydroxy functional groups. By using boric acid (BA) as a crosslinker, a hydrogel having dynamically reversible crosslink can be prepared. PDHPA-BA hydrogel have valuable characteristics including self-healing and pH-triggered sol-gel transition. PDHPA and its hydrogel possess innate hydrolytic degradability and biocompatibility owing to polypeptide backbone. In addition, they exhibit strong adhesion toward diverse surfaces. The mechanical performance and adhesiveness of the hydrogel can be enhanced by combining second polymer network and/or by introducing inorganic nanoparticles. |
