Synthesis and Characteristics of the β-Hydroxyalkylamide by Using Dimethyl malate |

First generation β-hydroxy alkylamide (β-HAA) was introduced to the powder coatings market in 1990. This curing agent is tetra-functional molecule, having 4 available hydroxy sites. The hydroxy groups react under the influence of temperature with the carboxyl sites of polyester. The β-HAA cure reaction begins at approximately 110℃, and the result is a highly crosslinked network of ester linkages. This reaction does not require catalysis due to hydroxyl functional group. So we increased the functional hydroxyl group of β-HAA using the dimethyl malate (DMMa). And the materials of hardener, in support of better thermal resistance, was been synthesized from reaction of DMMa and diethnaolamine (DEA). The DMMa was synthesized by esterification and confirmed FT-IR and 1H NMR. The synthesized DMMa slowly dropped the DEA containing the sodium methoxide under the nitrogen gasses. The methanol liberated during the reaction was continuously distilled off. |
