Hexagonally perforated lamellar phase of block copolymer as a host template to facilitate delicate nanoparticle localization |

Metallic or semiconducting nanoparticles embedded within a thin film polymer matrix provide versatile functionalities of nanocomposite ranging from plasmonics, photovoltaics and sensors. However, macrophase separation or random dispersion of NPs limit the possible access to optimal properties required for various nanodevice applications. Block copolymers have promisingly shown periodic sub-20nm structures by microphase separation of different polymer blocks. Here, we report the unusual and delicate positioning of guest Au nanoparticles in the host block copolymer microdomain. Poly(dimethylsiloxane-b-styrene) is blended with 10-12nm sized Au nanoparticles whose ligands are exchanged to thiol terminated polystyrene in order to ensure polystyrene domain selectivity of the nanoparticles. The block copolymer-nanoparticle blend provides one step fabrication process as the blend film self assembles into desired morphology of nanocomposite through single solvothermal annealing. |
