An ideal electromagnetic (EM) wave absorber is required to have high EM wave absorption, light weight, small thickness, easy processing, thermal stability, corrosion resistance and broad effective bandwidth. The electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption properties of Fe-Si-Al (sendust) alloy flakes as fillers in thermoplastic and thermosetting polymer matrices were compared. Sizeable effective bandwidth for both thermoplastic and thermosetting polymer nanocomposites was obtained due to the loss characteristics of sendust flakes. The absorption mechanism was discussed in terms of dielectric and magnetic losses in the nanocomposite. Relative permittivity and permeability parameters of the nanocomposite were reported and their effect on the impedance matching characteristics was elaborated. Finally, the potential applications based on the fabrication method were discussed for these polymer nanocomposite coatings. |
