Synthesis and Properties of Bent-Shaped Molecules with Chloro Substituent and Perfluoroalkyl Side Group |

The design and synthesis of novel achiral banana-shaped mesogens forming ferro- and/or antiferro-electric smectic or columnar mesophases is one of the most exciting research activities in the area of thermotropic liquid crystals. Banana-shaped mesogens broadly require two units: (i) a central unit, which provides the bending angle, and (ii) two rodlike units with a terminal aliphatic chain which could be attached to the central unit. In this study, we have synthesized and characterized the new liquid crystalline banana-shaped molecules containing central chloro substituent (X/Y= H/H, H/Cl or Cl/Cl) and perfluoroalkanes as a side chain. The structures of banana-shaped molecules were identified by elemental analysis and FT/IR and NMR spectrometry, and their thermal and mesogenic properties were investigated by DSC, polarizing optical microscope and X-ray diffractometry. |
