Carbon nanotube (CNT) showing superior physical and chemical properties have been paid huge attention in most areas of science and engineering. Due to the atomically smooth surface of nanotubes, lack of interfacial bonding limits load transfer from the matrix to the nanotubes. Therefore, chemical wet processes were adopted to get functionalized CNTs surface with strong adhesion at the nanotube-polymer interface and good dispersion, but these methods are anti-environmental, uneconomical, complicated, and industrially unscalable. Meanwhile, dry surface modifications using low/atmospheric plasma treatments have been performed as one of strong alternative because they are fast, solvent and contaminant-free green processes and enable a large area treatment as well as providing a wide range of grafted functional groups without affecting bulk properties. In this research, to functionalize CNTs powder efficiently and uniformly, we suggest an absorption type plasma reactor. Because absorption type plasma treatment on CNT powders is economical, efficient, and clean technology capable of mass production, it would be very promising tool for curtailing commercial use of CNTs. |
