Two-photon absorbing (TPA) materials have been extensively studied for various applications such as bio-imaging, photodynamic therapy, 3-D microfabrication, optical power limiting, and data storage. In order to utilize TPA materials especially for bio-imaging, there is a need for fluorescent labels with a large two-photon cross-section and high quantum efficiency to enable detection and enhance sensitivity. In this work, we have designed and synthesized TPA chromophores based on donor-π-donor systems miscible in biological environments. Their linear and nonlinear optical properties including fluorescent behavior in a living cell membrane were investigated. |
