Enhanced mechanical properties of biodegradable polymers via mechanochemistry |

Biodegradable materials are getting increasing attention to mitigate environmental issues. Poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) composites reinforced with cellulose nanofiber (CNF) are one of the most promising substitutes for fossil-based polymers due to their excellent processability and biodegradability. However, PBS/CNF composites have a major drawback. Poor interfacial compatibility between the polymeric matrix and the filler disturbs the dispersion of CNF in PBS matrix therefore resulting in aggregation of CNFs. To individualize and disperse CNF uniformly, PBS/CNF composites were fabricated via a mechanochemical process. A mechanochemistry process is a simple process and can individualize CNF effectively. We confirmed that CNF have been coated onto the surface of PBS particles evenly and the mechanical properties of PBS/CNF composites have been improved through a mechanochemical way. |
