Amorphous fluoropolymers are expected to be good candidates for various telecommunication and optical devices due to low optical loss from deep UV to near infrared region. In this study we synthesized trifluorovinyl ether (TFVE) based new monomers containing naphthalenes with different isomeric substitutions. These monomers undergo thermal (2 π +2π) cyclopolymerization without initiators and catalysts to form perfluorocyclobutane (PFCB) ring containing polymers which can show good thermal stability, high glass-transition temperature, low dielectric constant, and optical transparency. The structure of monomers and polymers were identified by FT-IR, 1 H-NMR and 19 F-NMR. The optical properties of the synthesized polymers such as refractive index and birefringence were characterized. Effects of isomeric backbone structures on thermal and optical properties will be discussed. Better understanding of the effects of the polymer backbone anisotropy on the properties of these fluoropolymers would be important for the development of the future photonic devices. |
