Modification of Polycarbonates Synthesized by Terpolymerization of CO2 and Epoxides Using Highly Active Zn/Co Double Metal Cyanide Catalysts |

The development of methods to activate and use carbon dioxide(CO2) to prepare chemicals and materials is an attractive research goal because CO2 is a readily available, inexpensive, non-toxic and nonflammable reagent. Terpolymerization of CO2 with alicyclic epoxides (cyclohexene oxide/vinyl cyclohexene oxide) has been carried out by using double metal cyanide (DMC) catalyst with excellent catalytic activity. Additionally, we modified the pendant vinyl groups on polycarbonate chain via thiol-ene click reaction, epoxidation/ring-opening reaction, and so on. We attached various molecules which have multi-functional groups such as hydroxyl and amino groups. Improved physical and mechanical properties of the resultant terpolymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, universal testing machine, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and various spectroscopic techniques. |
