Many efforts have been made to develop porous carbon materials with improved properties such as physical and chemical activation. Ionic liquids may be viewed as a new and remarkable class of solvents, or as a type of materials that have a potential to be used as useful templates with phenolic resin to prepare porous carbon foams. In this study, macroporous carbon foam was prepared using a mixture of phenolic resole and ionic liquid for the first time. The obtained carbon foams showed different porosity, size, and compressive strength tendency depending on weight % of ionic liquid, and the molar ratio of formaldehyde to phenol in phenolic mixtures. By increasing the concentration of ionic liquid, the electrical conductivity of carbon foams increased from 3.904 Χ 100 S / cm to 4.425 Χ 100 S / cm. This phenomenon might be attributed to unique electrical property of ionic liquid. |
