Improvement of thermal conductivity of carbon block by impregnation pitch characteristics |

In this study, to improve the thermal conductivity of the carbon block (CB), the effect of improving the thermal conductivity was verified by the impregnation process of two steps. The pitch for impregnation was coal tar based, and the pitch with three characteristics in softening point was used for impregnation process. In the autoclave, the impregnation process was carried out in two steps. The first step is to secure the fluidity of the pitch at 140 to 160°C. The second step is to impregnate the pitch with mesogenization at 350 to 430°C. Then, the furnace was heat-treated at 1100°C. Crystallization and density were evaluated by X-ray diffractometry and Archimedes' method, and thermal conductivity was evaluated by a transient plane heat source (hot disc) method. The experimental results exhibit that the two-step impregnation process increased CB density and lowered porosity to enhance the thermal conductivity. |
