Synthesis and characterization of a liquid crystalline monomer having an azo diphenyl diacetylene (DPDA) LC moiety in the side chain |

New materials for optical data storage have become of interest in recent years with a rapid development of information technology. Holographic storage has been used for data storage because the information packing densities can be increased by using three-dimensional (3D) storage techniques. Ideal holographic materials show high resolution, high diffraction efficiency, and high-speed recording. Photochromic polymers are known as high performance materials for optical storage. In this work, we have synthesized a new photochromic monomer (RM, Δn = 0.33) containing an azo diphenyl diacetylene (DPDA) moiety in the side chain. Also we observed liquid crystal phase of the new monomer and assumed the nematic liquid crystal phase based on DSC and POM. Thermal polymerization was also carried out and characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), FT-IR and UV-visible Spectrophotometer. |
