The study on Formulation of Supersaturatable Self-microemulsifying Drug Delivery System containing silymarin |

Carduus marianus extract(Silymarin) has been used mainly as a medicament for hapatobiliary diseases. The major component of silymarin is silybin. But its bioavailibility is low after oral administration due to its low aqueous solubility. The purpose of this study was to develop supersaturatable self-microemulsifying drug delivery system (S-SMEDDS) for improving solubility and dissolution rate of silymarin. The selected formulation of S-SMEDDS was comprised of oil(5% Capryol 90), S/Cos(2:1, 95% Tween 80/Transcutol P) with 1% CMC and Solutol HS 15. The S-SMEDDS formed a microemulsion after dilution with 185nm average droplet size and exhibited uniform droplet size distribution. The dissolution rate silymarin from S-SMEDDS showed about 80% release for 15 min. Therefore, it may be concluded that the developed S-SMEDDS formulation can be used an alternatively drug delivery system of silymarin to improve its solubility and dissolution rate. |
