Novel PHEMA Hydrogels Containing Sulfonated PEG |

Polymer hydrogels attract considerable interest as soft materials which are increasingly finding applications as biomedical materials. Poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) possesses important and useful properties such as excellent transparency, biocompatibility, wettability, and mechanical strength. In this study, in order to prepare novel hydrogel having an anionic characteristic, sulfonated PEG(SPEG) were introduced by graft copolymerization of HEMA solution containing varying amount of telechelic PEG macromer, MA-PEG-SO3H. From the swelling measurement, water absorption is increased with increasing MA-PEG-SO3H due to the increasing hydrophilic PEG component with additional sulfonate ionic end-group. The dynamic contacting angle measurement revealed that contact angle is decreased with increasing MA-PEG-SO3H. The morphology of the scaffold was investigated by SEM. The pore size of the scaffold could be easily controlled in the range 5-20um depend on the SPEG content. |
