Sewage sludge is considered as a suitable substitute for conventional biodiesel feedstock because is widely and consistently available and contains considerable amounts of organic compounds. Contrary to homogeneous chemical catalysts, heterogeneous solid catalysts have the significant advantage of enabling the possible reuse and easy separation from the reaction mixture, which would substantially decrease catalysts requirement and wastewater discharge. However, when biomass is used as a feedstock of biodiesel, it cannot be easily separated from reaction mixture. In this study, we devised a cartridge containing acidic polymer catalysts, and simply transferred the cartridge from a reactor to another one to produce biodiesel repeatedly. We also optimized the reaction conditions including solvent type, catalyst concentration, reaction time and temperature to maximize biodiesel yield. |
