Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been known to possess excellent mechanical, electrical, thermal and magnetic properties, but they have difficulty in dispersing into a various matrices such as solvents, polymers and other inorganic media. Thus, CNTs have been functionalized with various methods such as chemical, physical or combined approaches to give better affinity to the corresponding matrix. Among those, strong acids such as sulfuric acid, nitric acid or mixture of both are used as reaction and dispersion media. However, on the basis of our preliminary study, such strong acid treatments not only generate undesired defects on the CNT frameworks, but also turn CNTs into intractable carbonized fragments. As a result, outstanding properties of CNTs such as thermal and electrical conductivities are scarified. Hence, we would like to report the degree of CNT damage with respect to time in strong acid. |
