Cryopreserved Cell Viability Using Functionalized 2D Nanostructures with Anti-Freezing Activity |

As interest in cryogenic cold chains of medicines increases, the importance of cryopreservation of biological samples is being emphasized. In order to help the cells to survive after freezing-and-thawing cycle, cryoprotectant agents (CPAs) are commonly introduced to cell media. In this study, we demonstrate that self-assembled nanostructures have substantial ability to protect cells undergoing ice formation and growth, thereby can be utilized as a CPA as their nanoscale morphology and ice-philic function are tailored. The main goal of this research is to innovate the anti-freezing nanomaterials by benefitting from the recent advances of structural nanotechnology. The 2-dimensinal nanostructures are biocompatible materials that compensates for the drawbacks of existing chemical cryoprotectants. As a result of observing ice formation and recrystallization inside living cells, it was confirmed that 2-dimensinal nanostructures prevent cell damage and increase cell viability by preventing ice recrystallization. |
