In this study, the Tg of polymer nanocomposite was investigated. PMMA and PS nanocomposite were prepared by the addition of silica filler as a function of silica volume. The Tg of poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA)/silica and polystyrene(PS)/silica nanocomposites were investigated in the bulk with differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). Morphologies of silica particle in the matrix were investigated by using transmission electron microscope(TEM) and scanning electron microscope(SEM). At lower filler volume fraction than 1.0vol% of silica filler, the Tg of the PMMA/silica composite was increased by 5℃, when compared to the PMMA homopolymer. But no variation of the Tg of the PS/silica composite was observed, when compared to the PS homopolymer. The increase of the Tg of PMMA/silica nanocomposite is dependent on strong interactions between PMMA matrix and silica filler. The Tg of PS/silica nanocomposite is not dependent on interaction between PS matrix and silica filler. |
