In this study, polysulfone-Escherichia coli biomass composite fiber (PSBF) was fabricated by extruding the suspension of polysulfone (PS) and E. coli biomass and then the surface of PSBF was modified in two different ways to improve sorption performances for basic or reactive dyes. Amine-methylated PSBF (AM-PSBF) for basic dyes was prepared by methylation of amine groups present on the surface of PSBF. For the effective removal of reactive dyes, the surface of PSBF was coated with polyethylenimine (PEI) and cross-linked with glutaraldehyde to produce the PEI-coated PSBF and its manufacturing conditions were optimized by RSM. The maximum uptake of AM-PSBF was about 1.4 times higher than that of PSBF for basic dyes. Also, in the case of PEI-coated PSBF, the maximum sorption capacity for reactive dyes was enhanced to be 3.8-fold compared to PSBF. In conclusion, we confirmed that the sorption performance of the fibrous biosorbents can be improved through proper surface modifications. |
