Polymer/carbon nanocomposite hydrogels for electric field responsive transdermal drug delivery |

Nanocomposite hydrogels consisting of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/poly(acrylic acid) (PAAc)/ poly(vinyl sulfonic acid) (PVSA)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) were prepared by radical polymerization. PVSA has the negatively charged sulfonate groups and gives highly acidic properties to the hydrogels. MWCNTs were employed to improve both electrical conductivity and mechanical properties of nanocomposite hydrogels. The morphologies of nanocomposite hydrogels were investigated by scanning electron microscope. Swelling and drug releasing properties of nanocomposite hydrogels were investigated in pH 10 buffer under electric voltages applied. Electric field responsive drug release behavior of nanocomposite hydrogels had a close relation with the distribution of MWCNTs in nanocomposite hydrogels. The nanocomposite hydroigels are highly expected to be utilized as drug delivery system responding to electrical stimuli. |
