Polymer chain anisotropy of bi-functional photo-alignment layer studied by the optical and NEXAFS techniques |

The formation of UV-induced chain anisotropy of a photo-alignment layer was investigated. The specially designed photo-aligning polyimide was capable of being decomposed and dimmerized by the UV illumination, and both photo-processes contributed to the resultant chain anisotropy simultaneously. The individual processes were confirmed selectively by IR. The wavelength dependence of the chain anisotropy or optical birefringence was shown by making a power spectrum of the birefringence. With the knowledge of the wavelength dependence, we measured selectively the rates of formation of the chain anisotropy induced by each processes. The bi-functionality enabled a controlled anisotropy distribution along the depth of polyimide thin film. Simultaneous working of the two photo-processes on the film resulted in lower chain anisotropy at the top surface than in bulk region; the photo-dimerization alone made a reversed result according to the NEXAFS (Near Edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure) measurement. It could be explained by the difference in free volume between the top surface and bulk region. |
