Characteristics of the photosynthesis microbial fuel cell with a Chlorella vulgaris |

The photosynthetic microbial fuel cell (P-MFC) is a bioelectrochemical system capable of converting sunlight into electricity based on the exploitation of biocatalytic reactions within active microbial cells. The aim of this study was to increase the electrogenic capacity of P-MFCs in a newly designed fuel cell. Chlorella vulgaris was grown in the anodic part of the fuel cells against permanganate as the cathodic electrolyte. Bacteria affiliated with Bacteroidetes were inhibited when the power density was high, although their numbers were enriched at the end of the process. This study advanced a practical method for developing P-MFC technology into real world applications and furthermore revealed the main bacteria that play vital roles in power generation by analyzing the anodic bacterial community during the whole process. The integrated process can reduce the costs of wastewater treatment and electricity generation. |
