Biofouling Inhibition in Floating Photobioreactors via Alkylation of Tyrosol on Selectively Permeable Membrane |

Biofuels have been considered as attractive alternatives to petroleum-based fuels because production and consumption of biofuels could be carbon-negative and contribute to mitigating various environmental problems caused by increased atmospheric CO2 concentration. Biofuels from microalgae are considered as one of most promising alternatives. Photobioreactors with selectively permeable membranes (SPMs) could cultivate microalgae using nutrients dissolved in seawater. Biofouling which clogs and blocks the pores of SPMs should be prevented to prolong the lifespan of SPMs and decrease production cost. In this study, surfaces of SPMs, consist of polyethylene terephthalate, were grafted with 4-hydroxyphenyl bromide (4-HPB) to inhibit biofouling. 4-HPB grafted SPMs showed lower degree of biofouling and enhanced biomass productivity by 75% compared with the control. The results show that 4-HPB grafted SPMs is an effective way to inhibit biofouling and maintain permeability of SPMs.. |
