Enhanced Lipid Productivity by Increasing Ion Supply Rate to Tetraselmis sp. MBEyh01L in Semi-Permeable Membrane Photobioreactors |

Depletion of fossil fuels and climate changes from consuming them are major challenges that humans are facing. Using bioenergy could alleviate both problems, and microalgae have many advantages over other biomass as they can be grown with seawater in the ocean, are not major food sources, have rapid growth rates, etc. Unlike conventional algal culture systems, ocean-based systems could improve economic feasibility and sustainability of bioenergy production. Semi-permeable membrane photobioreactors can grow microalgae with nutrients in seawater. In this study, ion supply rate affected biomass productivity but not the lipid content. By increasing ion supply rate, biomass productivity up to 18.4 g/m2/d was achieved whereas lipid content was the same as 11% for different ion supply rates. As the ion supply rate was still productivity limiting factor for the current system, increasing it would enhance lipid productivity and further improve economic feasibility of algal biofuels. |
