제목 Enhancing Microalgal Fatty Acid Productivity in Floating Algal Cultures with Semi-Permeable Materials by Increasing Nutrient Supply Rates
초록 Biofuels from microalgae could alleviate the problems from using fossil fuels. Ocean-based algal cultures could benefit from the waves, large area, and infinite supply of seawater and nutrients dissolved to improve sustainability of algal cultivation. Semi-permeable materials (SPM) that allow penetration of particles smaller than algae can be used to cultivate algae with seawater. Effects of nutrient supply rate on the biomass and fatty acid productivities of SPM cultures systems were investigated. Nutrient supply rate was positively correlated with biomass productivity. Up to 18.6 and 13.5 g/m2/d biomass productivities were achieved indoor and ocean settings, respectively. Highest fatty acid content was 18% at 20°C. Results show that with SPM culture systems, microalgal biomass and fatty acids could be produced with nutrients in seawater. Continued advancements in the SPMs themselves and utilization of waves for culture mixing would improve economic feasibility of algal biofuels.
