A new coating method for activated carbon powder on QCM – Application to adsorption of VOCs |

Activated carbons (ACs) were prepared from Mongolian anthracite as sensing materials. The ACs were characterized by nitrogen adsorption/desorption experiments at 77 K in order to obtain BET surface area, average pore size, and pore size distributions. The micro- and meso- pore size distributions were calculated from nitrogen adsorption/desorption data by the HK and BJH methods, respectively. Prior to preparing sensor elements, The QCM surfaces were washed using piranha solution at 25 °C for 5 min and dispersed ACs were coated on the QCM surfaces used by handmade QCM holder. It was possible to ignore the influence of the adsorption on the binder. The adsorption experiment for benzene was conducted on the activated carbon-coated QCM sensor elements at pressures from vacuum to 500 Pa in order to assess the adsorption characteristics of the VOCs. |
