Preparation and evaluation of nanofiber sheets as a drug carrier for controlled release |

The electrospinning technology has been widely used as a method to manufacture nanofiber sheets (NS) for biomedical engineering. To advance a sustained dexamethasone (Dex) delivery, in this work, we used the biodegradable poly (ε-caprolactone-co-L-lactide) (PCLA) copolymer. PCLA copolymer was utilized to produce electrospun Dex-loaded NS using water-soluble Dex (Dex(s)) and water-insoluble Dex (Dex(b)). Then, interconnected fibrous structures were confirmed by SEM. The assessment of Dex(b) and Dex(s) release from Dex-NS showed an initial burst of Dex(b) at 1 day and, ever afterward, the release retained almost similar amounts of Dex(b) for up to 4 weeks, indicating no and little releasing of Dex(b). On the other hand, Dex(s)-NS exhibited little initial burst of Dex(s) and first order releasing profile from Dex-NS. In conclusion, Dex-NS exhibited the sustained Dex(s) releasing for prolonged action periods, as well as to induce biodegradation of the NS over a defined treatment period. |
