Poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) is intriguing materials in the field of supramolecular chemistry because of the reactive nitrogen heteroatom pyridine. Especially, polymeric nanoparticle synthesis from hydrophilic monomers such as 4-vinylpyridine (4VP) and self-assmebled nanobeads may be of great importance. In order to prepare monodisperse polymer particles, although surfactant-free emulsion polymerization (SFEP) of homopolymers has attracted researchers, the mechanisms of nuclei and polymer particles growth are not completely described because of the complicated process, that combines radical polymerization with complex colloidal phenomena. Therefore, in this study, we studied self-emulsion polymerization (SEP), which is a facile and reproducible method to synthesize mono-disperse and narrow polymeric nanobeads. What is more, we have ascertained the growth mechanism for the formation of these polymer beads for the first time and to clarify the mechanism of the bead formation. |
