To prepare monodisperse micron sized polystyrene(PS) particles, we studied the effect of vinylbenzyltrimethyl ammonium chloride(VBTAC) as costabilizer in dispersion polymerization. Cationically charged VBTAC led to that the particles were prepared more monodisperse and stable. By monitoring the polymerizatoin evolution and observing the morphological changes of the PS particles by microscopy. As a result, a lower amount of VBTAC was required to prepare monodisperse and stable PS particles. And the monodisperse particles with average diameters of approximately 1.8-4μm were obtatined. But the rate of polymerization was slow and the conversion was very low. So varied the stirring speed and temperature were investigated to increase the conversion and to show the effect of particle size and distribution. Mesurements were optical microscopy and SEM, particle size analyzer. |
