Thermoelectric power can be expressed by the figure of merit Z, which is a dimensionless factor in the terms of seebeck coefficient, electrical and thermal conductivity. A high conversion efficiency from thermal energy to electrical energy can be achieved by the combination of high seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity, and low thermal conductivity. However, because of that all the factors are coupled with each other, it’s very hard to reach an optimum combination of the factors. We tried to get the nano-structured strontium titanate sample to make a ceramic thermoelectric material, using a high molecular weight polymer as a scaffold. Lots of interfaces of the structured sample can make the high degree of phonon scattering, decoupling the electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity. In addition, a quantum confinement effect in the nano-structured sample can show an enhancement of the seebeck coefficient, contributing to get a high thermoelectric performance. |
