A Novel Application of Ionic Liquids for Facilitated Olefin Transport Membranes as a Carrier for Separation of Olefin/Paraffin Mixtures |

This is the first trial for applications of ionic liquids as a carrier for olefin facilitated transport. The separation performance of ionic liquids such as MOIM+NO3- (1-methyl-3-octyl imidazolium nitrate) and BMIM+BF4- (1-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium tetrafluoroborate) was investigated for olefin/paraffin mixtures. The formation of free cations, which was confirmed from slight shift of N-O stretching band upon propylene exposure by FT-IR spectra, may induce interactions between the free cations and olefin molecules such as propylene and ethylene, as supported by quantum mechanical ab initio calculations, resulting in separation performances of olefin/paraffin mixture. The improved separation performance will be interpreted by apparent diffusion and solubility coefficients, measured by transient sorption methods. |
