Preparation and characterization of Organoclays Having PTMG End Groups and Polyurethane/clay Nanocomposites |

Organoclays having PTMG end groups are prepared with different molecular weight and number of cationic sites in order to investigate their effect on d-spcaing and IEF. Properties of polyurethane/clay nanocomposites synthesized by pre-polymer method with use of the prepared organoclays are investigated. MDI is used as isocyanate and PTMG is used as polyol while 1,4 BD is used as chain-extender. Molecular weight of organoclays is varied from about 4500 to 9000 to evaluate the molecular weight effect. To investigate the effect of number of cationic sites, organoclays are prepared having one and two cationic sites with the same molecular weight. When PU is synthesized, organoclay is dispersed in PTMG and sonication is appied. Particle size of organoclay dispersed in PTMG is observed by OM. Significant difference is not observed in terms of hardness. However, various physical properties are increased with just adding 1% of organoclays such as thermal stability, tensile strength. |
