Edge-halogenated graphene nanoplatelets as electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction |

Edge-selective halogenations to graphene nanoplatelets (EHGnPs) were prepared by ball-milling graphite in the presence of chlorine, bromine or iodine, respectively, to produce chlorinated (ClGnP), brominated (BrGnP), and iodinated (IGnP) GnPs. The structures of EHGnPs were confirmed by using various analytical techniques and they have high BET surface areas of 471, 579 and 662 m2/g in that order, indicating that significant delamination has occurred during the ball-milling and workup procedures. The EHGnPs are well dispersible in various solvents for good processability in practice. The EHGnPs displayed remarkable electrocatalytic activity toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with high selectivity, tolerance to methanol crossover/CO poisoning effects, and long-term cycle stability. |
