It is important to enhance the proton conductivity of the electrolyte under low relative humidity to improve the PEMFC performance. The performances of PEMFCs operated at low humidity have been improved by using of catalyst layers containing SiO2 particles. Hydrophilic substances such as SiO2 were added into the catalyst layer to increase its moisture capping capacity. The catalyst ink was formed by mixing Pt/C catalyst, Nafion solution and appropriate amount of SiO2 powder. The highest performance was obtained in a cell with SiO2–CL, i.e., at 20%RH, the power density was 3 times larger than that without SiO2. The increased amount SiO2 has improved water content and microstructure in catalyst layer, resulting in the improved proton conduction and catalyst effectiveness. |
