Electrochemical Investigation on LiCl-KCl-CdCl2-NdCl3 for Developing Nd Recycling Process |

Electrochemical behavior of NdCl3 and CdCl2 with inert cathode and liquid cadmium cathode in LiCl-KCl eutectic at 500 ℃ was studied. Metallic Nd can be oxidized by CdCl2 and concentration monitoring technique of NdCl3 which was oxidized from Nd metal by cyclic voltammetry of CdCl2 was established. Whereas recovered Nd by conventional pyrometallurgical method was obtained as a form of metal powder and has low recovery efficiency, because of its disproportionation reaction, liquid cadmium cathode can suppress disproportionation reaction which results in increase of Nd recovery efficiency. Comparison of cyclic voltammetry of NdCl3 with cadmium film electrode and liquid cadmium cathode shows deoxidized Nd on liquid cadmium cathode forms Cd11Nd intermetallics. |
