The inclusion of metal nanocrystals in soft and elastic hydrogel networks can impart hydrogels with new physical and chemical properties not possible for a hydrogel alone. In this work, Janus hydrogel beads embedded with 2D Ag dendrites were produced by adding the alginate droplets in the AgNO3 solution. Alginate was crosslinked by Ag+ ions, and these were reduced by alginate to form Ag dendrite. It was found that UV light had a significant effect on the reduction of Ag+ ions and 2D Ag dendrites were selectively formed only in the area exposed to UV light. When the Janus hydrogel bead embedded with 2D Ag dendrites was used as a heterogeneous catalyst, it exhibited excellent catalytic activity and reusability. |
