Natural polyphenols have antioxidant activity by scavenging oxygen or radicals and reducing environmental molecules. Polymeric materials, which could still be easily degraded by external stimuli, such as heat, UV, ozone, could also benefit from the antioxidant properties of natural polyphenols. In this study, we added microparticles of tannic acid, irganox1010 and naringenin to polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to reduce polymeric degradation in thermo-oxidative conditions. After heating at 250 ℃ for 3 days, the Young’s modulus of PDMS with 1 wt% antioxidant increased by 3-fold which is significantly less than that of neat PDMS, which increased 40 fold. FT-IR spectroscopy showed much smaller peak changes of PDMS containing antioxidant in 1060〖cm〗^(-1) assigned to Si-R stretching than that of neat PDMS after oxidation. These initial exploration of natural polyphenols as heat stabilizers could pave a novel way to develop environmentally safe additives for synthetic materials. |
