Optimal Electricity System Model for Zero Carbon Emission in South Korea |

As the global response to climate change is strengthened, the significant regulations for greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel power have been focused. Integration renewable energy technologies with electricity systems has great potential to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, when renewable energies such as solar and wind power are handled in grid systems on a large scale, the high intermittency and uncertainty may lead to supply instability. Therefore, in this study, a mathematical model for optimizing electricity systems in South Korea was developed, with an emphasis on the integration of the current systems with optimal domestic grid network design, leading to a low-carbon system. Various data related to the electricity system were collected and analyzed for the optimization model. GAMS was used as an optimization program, EXCEL was used for data input by scenario, and R program was used for clustering for fast calculation. The developed model proposes an optimal domestic grid network design that simultaneously integrate a long-term system plan with a detailed short-term electricity generation operation schedule of unit plant for zero carbon emissions by 2050. |
