Improving drug properties with crystal engineering is important in the pharmaceutical industry. Especially, solubility and processibility are important factors in using drugs substantially. Hydrogels have received attention as tools for tailoring drug delivery strategy. Hydrogels have cross-linked networks of hydrophilic polymers and a significant amount of water. Active materials such as drugs or cells can be stored in the networks. The property of drug confined in hydrogel networks could be controlled, which are applicable to various biomedical areas. In this study, crystallization with hydrogel-mixed system enables unique drug crystallization: The gelation of alginate occurring in presence of mixed solution of calcium chloride and sildenafil locked up the drug crystals in hydrogel. As a result, sildenafil crystal size in hydrogel was significantly reduced, and sildenafil in the hydrogel shows fast release tendency. |
