Technical Trend of Lanthanide-Activated Fiber Amplifiers for Optical Communications Applications |

Fiber-optic amplifier is considered as one of main components indispensable for an optical communication system. It is well known that the advent of a suitable optical amplifier is necessary to broaden signal bandwidth of the current wavelength division multiplexing system. Elaboration of processing facilities has enabled a mass production of perfectly OH-free silica-based line fibers of which low-loss wavelengths range from ~1270 nm to ~1700 nm. To open up the entire ~400 nm optical transmission window of the dry silica optical fibers, new fiber amplifiers are thus necessary. In this talk, technical trend of ion-doped fiber amplifiers as well as Raman fiber amplifiers is presented with preferred interests in optical materials and their amplification mechanisms. |
