Ultra/micro filtration (UF/MF) membranes have been widely interested in water treatment process because of their relatively easy and simple process than other methods. However, the membrane process still has a limitation that the performance of membrane is restricted by the initially formed structure, and the membrane is easily fouled by proteins and organic materials. Thus, we prepared two step thermo-responsive membrane with tunable selectivity and improved cleaning efficiency by introducing thermo-responsive block copolymer. To achieve this, we prepared poly(N,N-dimethyl –aminoehtylmethacrylate)-b-poly(N-isopropylacrylamides) (PDMAEMA-b-PNIPAM) which have two different lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behaviors. The two step thermo-responsive membrane was prepared by phase inversion of mixture of PDMAEMA-b-PNIPAM and poly(ethersulfone) (PES). Two step thermo-responsibility of PDMAEMA-b-PNIPAM was determined by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), dynamic light scattering (DLS). In order to identify the tunable separation property and improved cleaning efficiency of the membrane, filtration test and fouling test were carried out. PDMAEMA-b-PNIPAM showed two different LCST and prepared membrane showed two step transition of permeability and rejection property. Indeed cleaning efficiency of membrane increased above the 2nd LCST (60 ℃). Therefore we demonstrated that two step thermo-responsive membrane was successfully prepared, and it had tunable separation property and improved cleaning efficiency. |
