제목 Mutually Insoluble PEG-Based Microcapsule: Biocompatible and Multicomponent Encapsulation
초록 Despite the recent development in various materials capable of encapsulating therapeutics and biomolecules for biomedical applications, there exist limited reports on multicomponent encapsulation in biocompatible microcapsules. In this work, we utilize the molecular weight dependent solubility of poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) to achieve direct encapsulation of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic cargoes in PEG-based microcapsules. We show that PEGDA 250, which has three PEG repeat units and two acrylate groups, is mutually insoluble in both water and oil unlike higher molecular weight analogues. By using PEGDA 250 as the middle phase in W/PEGDA250/W double emulsion drops, we demonstrate that PEG-based microcapsules allow simultaneous encapsulation of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic cargoes. We further confirm the validity of this approach by demonstrating that complex biomolecule such as protein can be effectively encapsulated within these PEG-based microcapsules.
