The limitation of microalgal CO2 fixation is that the microalgal culture has a relatively small CO2 removal rate because the CO2 solubility in the culture medium is not high. Therefor, to enhance the solubility of CO2 in aqueous solution, alkanolamines which are widely used for CO2 absorption were supplied into the culture medium. Primary alkanolamines such as MEA and AMP exhibited a strong inhibition to cell growth, but tertiary alkanolamine TEA enhanced cell growth rate when its concentration was below certain value. The optimal ratio of CO2 to TEA was 2% CO2 and 5mmol TEA/L. |
