Carbon capture and utilization (CCU) has been emerged to mitigate climate change. However, current CCU technology consumes a lot of energy for absorbent regeneration and separation of unreacted CO2 and products. Therefore, this study proposes reaction swing absorption (RSA), which removes both the regeneration and separation steps by employing electrochemical reduction of CO2 in absorbent as a bicarbonate form. This system is modeled and compared with other CCU systems (the reverse water-gas shift reaction and gas CO2 electrolysis) by techno-economic analysis, life cycle assessment, and global sensitivity analysis. The result shows that the proposed system has the best performance, in terms of economic as well as environmental aspects. |
