ATRP polymerization of Pentafluorophenyl Methacrylate |

Monomers containing pentafluorophenyl (PFP) ester groups have attracted many polymer chemists with key features to sequentially prepare well-defined functional polymers. While these types of monomers have mainly been studied to identify the polymerization kinetics for reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, there are only a few examples to study those monomers with other polymerization scheme. Herein, the kinetics of pentafluorophenyl methacrylates (PFPMAs) was studied with atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and compared in detail with the RAFT polymerization. PFPMA monomers were synthesized and the ATRP with PFPMA monomers was conducted under various conditions (i.e., ligands, solvent, monomer-to-initiator ratios etc). The detailed synthesis and characterization of the controlled radical polymerizations (both ATRP and RAFT) will be discussed. |
