The epoxidized vegetable oil (EVO) was synthesized using linseed oil and characterized using fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and gel permeation chromatograph (GPC). The EVO was blended with the epoxy resins (diglycidylether of bisphenol-A, DGEBA) to obtain the modified network, biodegradable epoxy, having EVO content from 10 to 40 wt.%. The DGEBA and biodegradable epoxy were characterized by the thermal and mechanical properties. The thermal properties of the biodegradable epoxy were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA). The mechanical properties were examined by measuring the fracture toughness and impact strength. The morphologies of fracture surface were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In the result, the impact strength of the biodegradable epoxy was significantly improved with the addition of EVO, owing to high intermolecular interactions in biodegradable epoxy |
