Batch RO system has been regarded as one of the most energy-efficient systems for desalination. In the batch RO, specific energy consumption (SEC) and recovery are determined by the design of the work exchanger vessel. Because the inlet and outlet streams of the work exchange vessel are connected to the RO module, the different concentrations between the inlet and outlet streams make a concentration gradient in the work exchange vessel. However, numerous researches have not considered the non-ideal mixing behavior in the work exchange vessel, just assuming the ideal case. To get more realistic results, we investigated the non-ideal mixing behavior using COMSOL, profiled the solution concentration, and quantified a non-ideal mixing factor. The results show a difference between ideal- and non-ideal mixing approximately 1.2 times in a 90L vessel. |
